Spain Digital Nomad Visa for Families: Spouses, Children and Parents

The digital nomad visa is a family visa as well as a work visa. A spouse or partner, children and in some cases dependent parents can apply with the main applicant. Each person adds to the income you must show and brings their own documents, insurance and fee. This guide explains who counts as family, what extra income you need, which documents each person provides and the points families most often miss. It is general information, and the lawyer confirms the details for your household.

Who can come with you

The consulates list three groups of family members who can obtain a family visa with the holder of a telework visa.

Extra income for each person

The household must show more income than a single applicant. For 2026, the Washington consulate publishes EUR 2,442 per month for the holder, EUR 916 for the first accompanying family member and EUR 306 for each additional one. The official FAQ expresses the same rule as 75% of the minimum wage for a two-person unit and 25% more for each additional person.

That gives a minimum of EUR 3,358 per month for a couple, EUR 3,664 for a family of three and EUR 3,970 for a family of four, as our arithmetic from the published amounts. The lawyer confirms the figure for your household. Our income guide has the full table.

Documents every family member provides

Washington and Chicago ask each accompanying family member for most of the holder's personal documents. Both the application form and the supporting documents are per person.

Proving the family relationship

Every relationship must be documented with civil registry records, apostilled and translated into Spanish. Originals and copies are required.

Fees and costs per person

Government fees multiply with the number of applicants. The official FAQ says the residence authorisation fee, about EUR 73 for an initial application, is paid for the holder and for each family member. Add a consular visa fee for each person, translations of every family document, and one health insurance policy per person. Our cost guide lists the items.

Applying together or later

Families commonly apply together so that everyone arrives and starts the process on the same schedule. UGE publishes a separate documentation sheet for family members applying inside Spain. Which approach suits your household depends on school calendars, housing, and whether the holder is applying from the US or from Spain, so raise it with the lawyer at the start rather than after you have gathered documents.

Common family mistakes

The most frequent problems are documents that were never apostilled, translations done by someone who is not a certified translator, a policy that covers the holder but not the children, and a marriage certificate that arrives after the income letter already assumed a two-person unit. Another is overlooking children who turn 18 before the filing date, because adult children are treated differently and need proof of dependence.

Questions families should ask the lawyer

Because family situations differ, bring these questions to the first consultation: whether each family member can work or study and under what conditions, how school enrolment is handled after arrival, what happens to family permits at renewal, and whether a partner who is not married needs extra evidence. We do not answer them here because they depend on your facts and on rules that change.

Check your eligibility

To see how your household fits the income and document rules, answer a few questions at /spain-digital-nomad-visa#eligibility. The form asks how many family members will come with you. An independent Spanish immigration lawyer's team reviews your answers and contacts you. Arx Capital Group is not a law firm; the lawyer contracts with you and bills you directly.

Frequently asked questions

Can my spouse and children come on the Spanish digital nomad visa?

Yes. The consulates say a spouse or unmarried partner, children and financially dependent adult children, and relatives in the ascending line under your care can obtain a family visa with the holder.

How much more income do I need for a family?

For 2026, Washington publishes EUR 916 per month for the first accompanying family member and EUR 306 for each additional one, on top of EUR 2,442 for the holder.

Does an unmarried partner qualify?

Yes. A registered partner needs the registration certificate. An unregistered partner in a stable relationship must document at least one year of partnership, or children in common with proof of stable cohabitation.

Do family members need their own health insurance?

Yes. Health insurance is one of the documents listed for each accompanying family member, and it must meet the same rules as the holder's: no co-payments, no waiting periods, from an insurer authorised in Spain.

Do my children need a criminal record check?

Only family members aged 18 or over need a criminal record certificate. Minors are signed for by a parent.
