Spanish Consulates in the US: Which One Covers Your State?

A Spanish consulate in the United States only accepts visa applications from people who live in its district, so the first step in applying for the digital nomad visa from the US is to find the consulate for your state. The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes the jurisdictions below. This page lists them for all fifty states and Puerto Rico, then notes what each consulate says about the telework visa. Filing methods and document lists change, so confirm on your consulate's own page before you travel or pay.

Jurisdiction table

The table follows the consulate directory on the website of the Spanish Embassy in Washington, checked on 12 October 2026. California is split between Los Angeles and San Francisco by county.

How to find your consulate

Find your state in the table. Where California is concerned, check your county: the Los Angeles consulate lists the counties it covers, and the rest of the state falls under San Francisco's Northern California district. If you live in a county you do not see listed under Los Angeles, confirm with the consulate before you book anything.

The consulates generally require proof that you live in the district, normally a state ID or driver's licence. If you are planning to move states before you file, tell the lawyer early because the consulate you use depends on where you live when you apply.

Washington, DC consular section

Washington covers the District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. Its telework visa page says filing is in person by appointment at the BLS Spain Visa Application Center at 1660 L Street NW, Suite 216, since 1 September 2026, with a legal decision period of ten days counted from the day the consular section forwards the documents through the visa system, which can be extended if an interview or more documents are requested. It publishes the 2026 income figures (EUR 2,442 for a single applicant) and an 18-item document list.

New York

The New York consulate covers New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Delaware. The consulate's jurisdiction page also lists honorary vice-consulates in Newark and Rochester, but those are not described as visa filing offices. Confirm the current telework procedure with the New York consulate.

Los Angeles

Los Angeles covers Arizona, Colorado and Utah plus ten southern California counties, including Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego and Riverside. If you live elsewhere in California, you file with San Francisco. Check the consulate's visa page for the current procedure and appointment rules.

Miami

Miami covers Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, which makes it the consulate for Atlanta, Orlando, Tampa and Charleston as well as Miami. The Ministry's consulate directory lists no separate Atlanta consulate. Confirm the telework visa procedure on the Miami consulate's website.

Chicago and the Midwest

Chicago covers thirteen states, from Ohio and Kentucky to the Dakotas, Kansas and Nebraska. Its telework page says applications are in person by appointment only and sets out a full document list, including an FBI check with a federal apostille and a certificate of coverage for Social Security. The page is dated January 2025 and still quotes the 2025 minimum wage, so rely on the 2026 figure (EUR 1,221 SMI, EUR 2,442 for a single applicant) and confirm with the consulate.

Houston and the South

Houston covers Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee. Nashville and Memphis applicants therefore file in Houston rather than Atlanta or Miami. Check the Houston consulate's visa page for its current rules.

Boston and New England

Boston covers Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. Its telework page says applications are in person by appointment only and lists the same documents as the other consulates, including a passport with at least one year of validity, two blank pages and an issue date within the last ten years.

San Francisco and the West

San Francisco covers Northern California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Alaska, Hawaii and the US Pacific territories. Check its visa page for its current telework procedure. If you live in Seattle, Portland or Honolulu, this is your consulate even though the office is in California.

What to do if the procedure is unclear

Consulate pages do not all say the same thing, and some were last updated before the 2026 minimum wage. Rely on the legal conditions in our requirements guide, use your consulate's page for the checklist and the filing method, and ask the lawyer to confirm any point that conflicts. Do not pay a fee or book travel on the strength of a third-party summary, including this one.

Check your eligibility

Once you know which consulate covers you, the next step is to see whether your situation fits the visa. Start the short eligibility check at /spain-digital-nomad-visa#eligibility and an independent Spanish immigration lawyer's team will review it. Arx Capital Group is not a law firm; the lawyer contracts with you and bills you directly.
